Frequently Asked Roofing Questions

Be sure to check out a roofing contractor’s customer reviews and portfolio of work. When a roofing company is certified by leading industry manufacturers like Owens Corning or GAF, it means it is properly insured and committed to the highest levels of quality installation and customer service. An industry-certified roofing contractor like Winnipesaukee Roofing & Siding can also offer extended warranties.

How can I find a trusted roofer and why should I hire an industry-certified contractor?

During your inspection, we’ll look at all the components of your roofing system: roof deck and frame, surface materials like asphalt shingles and flashing, and related interior spaces, such as attics and crawl spaces. We’ll combine a visual inspection with modern technology (infrared and aerial cameras and satellite images) to make a thorough assessment of your roof’s condition. After your inspection, we’ll provide you with a detailed assessment and an honest recommendation for repair or replacement.

What should I expect during a roofing inspection?

If you have dark brown or black streaks on your roof, you likely have algae growth—yuck! This is very common in the Northeast. We offer algae-resistant roof shingles. Contact us to learn if this is a good option for you.

What are the dark streaks on my roof?

As a design-build firm, we offer a full range of services beyond roofing. Many times, our clients need other services, and working with us provides the convenience of a “one-stop-shop.” Plus, if we identify any structural problems when assessing your roof, we can advise you on what to do.

Why is a full-service design-build company better than a standard roofing company?

There are several reasons why we don’t recommend double-layer, “go-over” roofs. This technique can cause significant moisture problems due to the lack of ventilation between the two layers of roofing material—leading to mold and mildew growth in your attic space.

Why is a double-layer “go-over” roof a bad idea?

Inadequate ventilation and insulation in the attic, combined with the presence of warm air leaking from the living space into the attic can cause ice dams. This escaping warm air causes accumulated snow to melt and run down the roof.  When it reaches colder areas near the eaves, it will refreeze and form a dam. Since the trapped melted snow has nowhere to go, it can back up beneath the shingles and leak into the home through cracks and crevices in your roof or walls.

What causes ice dams?

Proper attic ventilation is essential to maintaining a healthy and comfortable living space. It also prevents moisture buildup which can lead to mold growth, unpleasant odors, and structural damage to your attic or roof. By allowing for proper circulation, it also reduces condensation—extending the life of your roof and home structure. With the right amount of attic ventilation, you can keep your home comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient.

What is proper attic ventilation important?
